Sorry I haven’t blogged in a little while now! I’ve been pretty sick lately and just getting over it all now (don’t worry mum it wasn’t too bad..)
Peru has been awesome so far. We flew from BA to Lima to Cusco yesterday and just the landscape is so incredibly different to Australia. As soon as we arrived at the airport we were flooded with Llama beanies, bags and all array of things, it’s great! All the buildings and streets are just amazing. This is such a different place to what I’ve ever seen before. Looking forward to getting a chance to show you pictures!
We spent the first day just getting used to the altitude and settling in to where we’re staying. The hostel we’re at is pretty nice, some free internet but it is very very slow. All the markets are pretty amazing. The girls just got back with bags and bags full of things that cost “almost nothing”.
Today we spent with ELIM, a christian orphanage. They take in many of the street kids that the state orphanages reject. They are pretty amazing people and we were able to help them just by moving some of their bakery equipment to the next suburb. They teach the kids lots of useful skills as well as teaching them english. I might have accidentally broken a window using Susanna’s hand We offered to pay to replace it and but they didn’t seem to mind too much.
The reduced amount of oxygen in the air is pretty weird. It’s surprising noticeable just by walking up or down stairs or by trying to move heavy baking machinery… Lots of people have recommended drinking Coca tea which helps get rid of altitude sickness. Apparently it’s kinda like cocaine but I’m not too sure if that’s going to stop me yet…
We’re heading back to ELIM tomorrow which should be awesome. They work they are doing is really positive and it’s great to be able to be a part of it! Hopefully I’ll blog again tomorrow but I can’t make any promises. Oh and James and I had a great time trying to get money out of an ATM, but that will probably make no sense…
