My Favourite Podcasts of 1992-2016

I try to listen to a lot of podcasts and these below are some of my favourites of the last few years. The first few are roughly in order of my most recommended

If you find time (driving is a good option!) to listen to any of these, I’d absolutely love to chat about it.

I think I’ve found that this has been one of the major ways that God has encouraged and spoken to me. I hope that they might do the same for you

[RISE] The Centrality of the Gospel – Keller

I think that this . I think that it is extremely important for all people. What is at the base of what we believe?

The RISE series is focused on Redeemer’s gospel based core values

What is the at the foundation of Christianity? What are our fundamental beliefs and their practicalities? We get so familiar with this term “the Gospel”, but what is it? What does it mean?

Hiding from God – Darrin Patrick

One of my favourites. Story of Jonah – I used a lot of this for a sermon at Austral

“We hide; God seeks. That’s the Bible. He’s relentless in his pursuit.”

Pride: The Case of Nebuchadnezzar – Keller

Ridiculously challenging and encouraging to me

“Nebuchadnezzar’s pride began in contentment and prosperity, but he had no peace of mind. It caused him to take credit for everything he’d achieved. God dehumanized him in a reflection of what pride had done to his heart. Only when he recognized his debt to God – and that he was the object of God’s mercy – could he be humbled and healed of his pride.”

The Glory of God as the Ground of the Mind’s Certainty and the Goal of the Soul’s Satisfaction – Piper

Summary of Piper’s journey into Christian Hedonism combined with how we can know the bible to be true

“1) The quest for truth and the quest for joy turn out to be the same quest.

2) The path to unshakable conviction and the path to unending contentment are the same path.

3) Knowing for sure, and rejoicing forever, happen by the same discovery of the glory of God in the Word of God.

4) The way you know for sure what is true, and the way you find your supreme treasure are the same, namely, by seeing the glory of God in the word of God, especially in the saving work of the Son of God, Jesus Christ.”

The Plundering of Your Property and the Power of Hope – Piper

Hope brings invincible joy. Hebrews 10:32–36

We have been Suffering from Dominance and Prosperity

“If we are going to be courageous and fearless before our opponents, if we are going to live so that the worth of the gospel is manifest, if we are going to take the risks the early Christians took for Christ and his kingdom, if we are going to hope fully, then we are going to have to set our minds on things that are above not on things that are on the earth. We are going to have to focus our mind’s attention and our heart’s affection on the better and abiding worth of our reward in heaven — God.”

Aromatic Confidence

Again, I LOVE this one. Where does our confidence come from? What defines us?

“The Cross of Christ turns things upside down for us.”

Think it not strange: Fiery Trials and the Testimony of Christ – Piper

Christianity in America (and Australia!) is becoming “less nominal, more defined, and more outside of the mainstream of American culture.”

Are we too “at home” in this world? How do we prepare and deal with persecution for our faith? 1 Peter 4:12–19 “Think it not strange”. How Should We Respond to What Is Coming?

Make War: The Pastor and His People in the Battle Against Sin – Piper

Do we care about our sin? Should we? How do we kill it?

How Dangerous Is Sin?

How Shall We Put Sin to Death?

Simultaneous Joy and Sorrow (Look at the Book) – Piper

“Peter is writing to exiles on the earth, helping them endure the darkness and opposition of this world with joy. In this Look at the Book, John Piper traces the theme of suffering in 1 Peter. In addition, John Piper also explains the heart and vision behind the method of Look at the Book for studying the Bible.”

Friendship – Keller

This always reignites my passion to forge good friendships. Friendship cannot be taken for granted.

“Wise people are good at choosing, forging, and keeping friendships. The marks of a true friend are constancy, carefulness, candor, and counsel. When you are liberated to be the great friend you need to be by the great friendship of Jesus on the cross, then you will find yourself getting, paradoxically, all the friends your heart needs.”

Authentic Christianity – Keller

What does it mean to be a Christian? How can we know we will be saved?

“In the conclusion to the sermon on the mount, Jesus challenges everyone. He challenges those who don’t attend church by telling them that not all roads lead to God. He challenges those inside the church by telling them that not everyone who calls him “Lord, Lord” will be saved.”

A world of Idols – Keller

I don’t actually remember this one very well…

The gospel should change not just our inner being but also the way we relate to the outside world. Paul engaged with society every day. He was distressed, indignant and compassionate about the Athenians’ beliefs, but he kept his eyes on the cross to inform his words. He recognized their idols and raised up Jesus as the only true God.

Work and Rest – Keller

How does the Sabbath translate into modern living?

“The religious leaders in Jesus’ time had a long list of rules regarding the Sabbath. When questioned, Jesus does not respond by dismissing the Sabbath, but rather redefines it – by dying on a cross. As Christians, we are able to enter into his rest and enjoy the same rest that God enjoyed after creation, by means of his works, not ours. The Sabbath is a blessing from God and one we will only enjoy if we understand it correctly.”

Missions – Keller

Missions has a unique link to joy

“We are smothering under our small ambitions. Our hearts and minds were made for nobler things. God does not bless Christians merely to fulfill their individual needs, but sends them out on mission to display Jesus and to meet the needs of others.”

Watermark’s Marriage Ministry Conference – Chan

Chan has such passion. Such a great sermon of mission in marriage

One with Us, One with Him

1 John 1:1–4 (can’t remember this one well)

All of these are gold
